Celebrating Culture, One Print at a Time: Lunar New Year & Pooh Bear Piñata
Compartir
In New Orleans, culture isn’t something you observe from a distance. It’s something you grow up in and live in every day. It shows up in the food we cook, the music drifting down the block, the languages you hear at the playground, and the traditions families pass down year after year.
At Pearls & Pelicans, that lived-in sense of culture inspires how we design. Our prints are never random. They’re stories. They’re celebrations. And they’re an invitation for little ones to grow up surrounded by color, tradition, and meaning.
Two of our most intentional designs, Lunar New Year and Pooh Bear Piñata, reflect cultural celebrations that hold deep meaning for many families across New Orleans. Each print honors tradition through thoughtful details, joyful design, and everyday wearability, while reflecting the diverse communities that help shape life here.
Why Cultural Celebration Matters in Kids’ Clothing
Children learn about the world long before they can explain it. They notice patterns, colors, rituals, and symbols. When clothing reflects a variety of cultures and traditions, it opens the door to early conversations (sometimes quiet ones, sometimes playful ones) about how different families celebrate, honor history, and come together.
In New Orleans, those conversations happen naturally. Lunar New Year celebrations within Asian communities. Hispanic Heritage Month events in schools and neighborhoods. Family traditions that are shared through food, music, and gathering.
Our goal is not to simplify those moments or turn them into something performative. It’s to acknowledge them with care and to create clothing that feels joyful, wearable, and meaningful for everyday life.
Lunar New Year: A Tradition of Renewal and Good Fortune

Typically honored between late January and mid-February, Lunar New Year is celebrated by families across many cultures and communities, including Chinese and Vietnamese families here in New Orleans. The holiday marks the beginning of a new lunar calendar and centers on themes of renewal, family connection, and hopes for good fortune in the year ahead.
Red plays a central role in Lunar New Year celebrations, symbolizing luck, joy, and prosperity. Lanterns, envelopes, and festive details often fill homes and gathering spaces as families come together to honor tradition and welcome a fresh start.
The Inspiration Behind Our Lunar New Year Print
Our Lunar New Year print was created to reflect the richness of the celebration. The design brings together all twelve zodiac animals, layered among traditional symbols that represent luck, light, and continuity. Each element was chosen intentionally, allowing families to point, identify, and talk about what they see.
This is a print designed to grow with your child — something they can wear now, and something that may one day be passed down as a reminder of early traditions and shared moments.
